Description:
I hosted Big Brother Gold Coast back in the era where Yahoo games were very popular. At the time, I was playing/hosting as my favorite alias Dean, a college student with a penchant for kangaroos. My co-host for that game was my dear friend Stephanie (SC2427). This game followed on the heels of the first Survivor game I'd ever hosted (Ascencion), and in retrospect it was probably difficult to expect as active and dramatic a cast as that game had. A few of the players were repeats - my friend Peter was in both games, and the two "fake fiances" Zoey and Andy had also been in Ascencion. Zoey claimed to have been engaged to Toby, a player in my first game, but I think it was fairly obvious to everyone involved that they were the same person (at one point, I think she even signed one of her e-mails "Toby"). Similarly, Andy (who claimed to be in his late 20s), had played in Ascencion as his fiancee "Shana" and also ended the game in third place. It was later revealed that Andy was actually 16.
The reason this game isn't ranked very high is because there was very little drama and I don't really remember any amazing strategic moves being made. With the exception of Brittany, all the women that we cast in the game were older than the average player and many of them played very passively. I recall Royann, Hadley and Anita all asking to be evicted because they were on the block with someone they liked. The guys definitely dominated the game both socially and strategically. I remember Robin, who was somewhat of an underdog, declaring herself the "female winner" because she was the last woman standing when she was evicted at the final five.
In the end, Greg (who had been sort of the Dr. Will of the game) charmed his way into the final two with Darren, who was very likable but also very under the radar. The jury was relatively bitter that Greg had screwed most of them over, but I recall him giving very good jury answers and winning enough of them over to take the game. On second thought, it's possible that it was a close vote - my memory of it is hazy. But in any case, Greg deservedly won.
The most dramatic moment came early on in the game when Mike decided the challenges were too time-consuming and quit the game. Because "The Joe Schmo Show" was on at the time, I sent out an e-mail to everyone announcing that he had quit, which copied the catchphrase from that show: "Ashes to ashes, dust to dust, Mike, you're dead to us." However, having not seen that show, he did not think it was particularly funny and sent me a series of angry, harassing e-mails about how I didn't have any respect for someone with a real life, and how I'd never be as good of a host as him, etc. (Note: He's a terrible host.) I remember being so taken aback by his violent reaction - it was the first, but not the last time, that a player misunderstood my sense of humor and went apeshit on me.
Gold Coast was a technically sound game and it was fun getting my first opportunity to cohost with a friend, but due to its relatively uneventful nature, it ends up in 11th place on this countdown.
